Commission on Christian Leadership Formation

(merger of the Committee on Lay Preaching and the Committee on Preparation for Ministry)

G-2.0101 Christ’s Ministry: The Church’s ministry is a gift from Jesus Christ to the whole Church. Christ alone rules, calls, teaches, and uses the Church as he wills, exercising his authority by the ministry of women and men for the establishment and extension of God’s new creation. Christ’s ministry is the foundation and standard for all ministry, the pattern of the one who came “not to be served but to serve” (Matt. 20:28). The basic form of ministry is the ministry of the whole people of God, from whose midst some are called to ordered ministries, to fulfill particular functions. Members and those in ordered ministries serve together under the mandate of Christ. [Book of Order 2019-2021]

The core concern of the Commission on Christian Leadership Formation (C-CLeF) is to present to youth and adults the challenges and opportunities of church vocations and ministries. C-CLeF’s central mission reveals itself in the various aspects of our work:

  • Promoting congregational vitality through spiritual development and discipleship at the local level
  • Supporting and encouraging the Christian growth of youth and young adults
  • Providing training for ruling elders and deacons
  • Supporting discernment, preparation, and certification for ruling elders to serve as worship leaders and in other pastoral roles
  • Supporting discernment and overseeing preparation for ordination to the ministry of Word and Sacrament
  • Presenting continuing education opportunities for commissioned ruling elders, ministers, and other worship leaders

Congregational leadership development

From time to time, we offer workshops to enhance spiritual formation and discipleship in our congregations. Topics may include:

  • Worship: planning, music, use of technology
  • Finances: stewardship, budgets, grants
  • Outreach & evangelism: developing local partnerships, telling your church's story
  • Social justice, mission, and community service
  • Christian education: Bible studies, book studies, Sunday school for children and adults
  • Engaging children & youth in the ministry of the church

Discernment, preparation, and certification for ruling elders to serve as worship leaders and in other pastoral roles

In the life and ministry of the church, we are in a time when ruling elders are being called upon to provide spiritual leadership within and beyond their congregations. Some find themselves leading worship services in their congregations on a regular basis, and others may be commissioned to particular pastoral service as assigned by the presbytery, such as lay preaching, officiating at Communion, and/or serving as a pastoral counselor.

In order to prepare ruling elders for such ministries, C-CLeF instructs and supports the presbytery’s lay preachers in the Bible, Reformed Theology and Sacraments, Presbyterian Polity, preaching, leading worship, officiating the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper, providing pastoral care, and teaching.

If you feel God leading you to this ministry, please use the comments/questions form below to contact us.
